Zanzibar, Tanzania, 2025

The series Sea Rags examines garments left behind on the beaches of Zanzibar. Sun-bleached and half-buried in the sand, among these discarded garments are kangas, which carry deep cultural weight.

Traditionally used by East African women to communicate through intricate patterns and printed proverbs, the cloth marks every major milestone from birth to death. How they come to rest on the shore remains a mystery.

By photographing their weathered folds intimately, I explore how fabric remembers the bodies it once held — a lingering meditation on what remains.

Sea Rags IV is part of the Sea Rags series, presented at Hungry Eye Fair Amsterdam 2026.
